Not Ready to Talk About Life Insurance? Read This First
Feeling overwhelmed by life insurance? You’re not alone. Che’ The Life Guy shares why so many families put it off, and one small step you can take without the pressure.

Let’s be honest. Most people don’t avoid life insurance because they don’t love their family. They avoid it because it feels like one more big thing on a plate that’s already full.
You open the email, see the forms, and think, “I’ll get to it when I can give it my full attention.” Then a week goes by. Then a month. Every time you see that email sitting there, you feel a little guilty.
If that’s you, hear me on this. There’s no shame in it. I’ve sat across the table from teachers, business owners, first responders, and parents who all felt the same way. Some of them told me straight up that they were hesitant to even start.
Why it feels so heavy
Life insurance asks you to think about two things nobody enjoys: money and mortality. That’s a lot to carry on a Tuesday night after work.
It also looks like homework. Forms, health questions, beneficiaries, coverage amounts. When something looks complicated, our brains file it under “later.” That’s not laziness. That’s being human.
And for a lot of folks, there’s an unspoken worry underneath it all. “What if I find out I’m not as protected as I thought?” Sometimes it feels easier not to look.
“Not right now” is not the same as “never”
Here’s the difference I want you to see.
“Not right now” is a timing issue. Maybe you’re closing out a busy season at work, handling a family situation, or just running on empty. That’s real, and it’s okay to say so.
“Never” is different. “Never” happens quietly. Nobody decides to leave their family unprotected. It just happens one postponed week at a time.
The goal isn’t to rush you. The goal is to make sure “not right now” doesn’t turn into “never” without you choosing it.
You don’t have to do it all at once
Most people think getting protected means one long sitting where you figure everything out. It doesn’t.
You can start with one small step that takes less than five minutes. No forms. No phone calls. No salesperson.
Grab a piece of paper and answer two questions.
First, who depends on your income? Your spouse, your kids, a parent you help support, a business partner, employees.
Second, if something happened to you tomorrow, what would you want them to keep? The house. The kids’ plans for school. The business you built. The ability to grieve without worrying about the mortgage.
That’s it. That piece of paper is the start of your plan. Everything else is just making it official.
What a good conversation looks like
When you’re ready to take the next step, it should feel like a conversation, not a pitch.
A good agent asks about your life before they talk about products. They explain things in plain English. They don’t push you to decide on the spot. And if the timing isn’t right, they respect that.
That’s how I work. I spent years protecting people in uniform. I still see this the same way. My job is to help you protect the people you love, at a pace that works for your life.
