Hi there,
Welcome to the first issue of The Legacy Brief, a short read twice a month on protecting your family, your home, and your business.
I spent my career standing between people and danger: Air Force, Texas State Trooper, then back in uniform with the Army. This newsletter is the same mission in a different uniform. No jargon, no pressure, just what I'd want my own family to know.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ THIS ISSUE: OPEN ENROLLMENT — IS YOUR WORK LIFE INSURANCE ENOUGH? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It's benefits season. Most employer plans include group life insurance, and that's a good thing. But it's usually set at 1x or 2x your salary, and it typically stays with the job, not with you. Leave, get laid off, or retire, and that coverage can disappear.
Here's what that looks like for a typical family.
EXAMPLE: MARCUS, 38 Earns $65,000. Married, two kids. $240,000 left on the mortgage. Work plan: 1x salary.
What his family would actually need (the DIME method): • Debt (car, cards): $15,000 • Income (10 years replaced): $650,000 • Mortgage (paid off): $240,000 • Education (two kids): $100,000 TOTAL NEED: $1,005,000
What his work plan pays: $65,000 THE GAP: $940,000, about 93% of what his family would need.
Marcus isn't careless. He checked the box at work and assumed he was covered, like most of us do. Your numbers will be different, and that's the point: you won't know your gap until you run your own.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ YOUR 10-MINUTE OPEN ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1. Check your beneficiaries. Marriage, divorce, a new baby? Make sure the right names are on file. 2. Find your multiple. Is your coverage 1x, 2x, or a flat amount? Write the dollar figure down. 3. Ask, "Does it leave with me?" Find out whether you can keep or convert it if you change jobs, and what it would cost. 4. Compare before you buy "supplemental." Extra group coverage is convenient, but a policy you own may cost less and won't depend on your employer.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ★ VETERAN'S CORNER — Veterans Day is Nov. 11 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Leaving the service? Watch the 240-day clock. When you separate, your SGLI can convert to VGLI. Apply within 240 days and there are no health questions. After that you still have until 1 year and 120 days, but you'll have to answer health questions.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WANT TO KNOW YOUR NUMBER? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I'll run the same math we did for Marcus, with your real numbers, in a free 30-minute call. No paperwork, no obligation.
